An interesting paper by OActive Project partner CERTH about the “Physical Activity as a Risk Factor in the Progression of Osteoarthritis: A Machine Learning Perspective” is now published in the conference proceedings of the “International Conference on Learning and Intelligent Optimization LION 2020: Learning and Intelligent Optimization”.
“Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) comes with a variety of symptoms’ intensity, frequency and pattern. Most of the current methods in KOA diagnosis are very expensive commonly measuring changes in joint morphology and function. So, it is very important to diagnose KOA early, which can be achieved with early identification of significant risk factors in clinical data. Our objective in this paper is to investigate the predictive capacity of physical activity measures as risk factors in the progression of KOA. In order to achieve this, a machine learning approach is proposed here for KOA prediction using features extracted from an accelerometer bracelet. Various ML models were explored for their suitability in implementing the learning task on different combinations of feature subsets. Results up to 74.5% were achieved indicating that physical activity measured by accelerometers may constitute an important risk factor for KOA progression prediction especially if it is combined with complementary data sources”.

The OActive project is organising a training seminar aiming to “Engage end users to the OActive world“, which will be held ONLINE on 29th of May.
The training session will bring together EU and national representatives from:
– the medical care industry
– General public (Individuals, OA patients, elderly, athletes),
– Regulatory authorities (Ministries of health, organisations, orthopaedic associations, etc.)
– Research & education communities
OActive targets patient specific prediction and interventions by using a combination of biomarkers, behavioural modelling, mechanistic computational models, simulations and big data analytics. Scientists from well-established institutes around Europe (including University of Nicosia, LEITAT, KULeuven, Smartex, Liverpool John Moores University, CERTH, University of Patras, RIMED) will give lectures during the training. Participants will be able to raise questions to the panel of experts.

The OActive project 24M meeting took place in Palermo on 25th of November 2019 hosted by Ri.MED. All partners presented the work performed and their future plans. Ri.MED offered a guided tour of the consortium in its premises.
On 26th of November a training session was organised by AXIA Innovation with the support of Project Coordinator from University of Nicosia and Ri.MED. A training session was organised in order to ensure the best understanding and the efficient transfer of knowledge among RTD and computational partners. The ultimate goal was to bridge the two different worlds giving an opportunity of communication.
